In November 2024, a meeting took place between representatives of the management of Charles University (CU) and Technische Universität Dresden (TU Dresden), during which a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions and a framework cotutelle agreement between Charles University and the School of Science, TU Dresden, were signed.
The partner institutions have decided to establish an institutional framework for bilateral cooperation in the field of doctoral studies under joint supervision of dissertations (cotutelle). The aim is to further develop doctoral studies and research and to support the mobility of students within cotutelle.
Given the existing collaboration, the field of natural sciences was chosen as the primary area for this cotutelle collaboration, with the prospect that cooperation could expand to other fields in the future. Moreover, this collaboration opens up the possibility of conducting specific doctoral studies and research in collaborations with other research institutions, such as the J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, or the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden. These institutions can provide research facilities and equipment, specialized training, and financial support.
The framework agreement also includes a bilateral template that both institutions will use when concluding individual cotutelle agreements. The entire process of preparing and concluding individual agreements is expected to be significantly simplified administratively.
